Swedish Exile: Hopes and Dreams
The project was inspired by a previous assignment in Syria covering the plight of the Iraqi refugees stranded in Syria. It soon became apparent that most families relied on resettlement through the UNHCR to western countries such as the USA, Scandinavia and
Europe. One of the subjects was subsequently relocated to Sweden to a remote village called Forshaga.
I followed him there to capture him and his family in this unfamiliar environment. The project resulted in a series of portraits of other refugees from other countries set in Swedish town of Forshaga. The portraits give a face to an otherwise statistical and anonymous phenomenon.
